Welcome to the Friday Link Roundup Post. We’re going to give you a quick pulse on the Cloud and let you know what news has been keeping us reading. The theme of this week’s links is buy outs and syncs.
The bidding war between Dell and 3PAR has continued to heat up. HP has been gobbling up Cloud Computing companies left and right. It’s a sure sign to me that HP has big things planned. Whether it’s offering their own Cloud Computing environment, offering private Clouds or just strengthening their position in the future, watch out! The latest battle is over 3PAR, a “utility storage” company. It looks like Dell may come in with the winning offer. I really think Dell needs this for it’s future. Dell’s main business functions around selling PC’s. Perhaps they’re finally hearing the siren’s call of the Cloud? It looks that way at least as they’re battling HP for 3PAR. Personally, I think that Dell has seen the writing on the wall. If they’re going to compete in the PC market they’re going have to evolve. I’m expecting to see thinner Notebooks, Netbooks and possibly tablets that come standard with some sort of private “Dell Cloud”. I also suspect they’ll encourage you to have your computer at home but now you’ll sync it with your thin client and mobile phone.
But isn’t that what everyone including Microsoft’s resurrected LiveMesh is doing? Moving at a snail’s pace Microsoft is prepping their Cloud and putting a half billion into Marketing for the Windows 7 phone. Although slow to move…the Windows Cloud is coming.
Phone Wars
Google voice is now battling Skype head on. If you use Gmail you’ll notice the option to place a a call right through e-mail and so far over 1 million calls have been placed in under 24 hours. With Skype headed towards and IPO and with over 500 million users I’d say they have the head start. Are we seeing the home phone making a come back?
Thanks for tuning in! We’ve got some more news headed your way next week.
